The Mya's Place Story

My name is Tammy Corley-White and I am the founder of  Mya's Place.  I believe that children and education are in my blood after discovering that I come from a long line of educators.  I received my B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education. From there, while teaching in one of the top school systems in Georgia, I received my M.A. in Education.  Finally in 2004, I enrolled in the "University of Motherhood" on November 18th,  and  prior to charting a new course,  I received my ED.S.  in Administration and Supervision.

For years as an Early Childhood Educator, I have loved and parented hundreds of children from all walks of life!  During this time, my experience in the classroom has allowed me to embrace a rainbow of children.  Over the years, as a student and educator, I recognized the importance and significance of  "images". What you see, can greatly impact what you become!  With this realization in mind, I incorporated learning materials in my classroom that told stories and depicted characters of color in a positive light, especially African American children. In fact, a number of times, I recall witnessing the eyes of my students sparkle when they walked in the classroom and saw an "image" that looked like them!

However, while experiencing the miracle of motherhood and  preparing for the day that I would bring home my special gift, I realized how virtually impossible it was trying to find "things" that represented our African American culture.  As I began to passionately create a personal space for my little girl, Mya, to ensure that she would feel proud of her ethnicity, Mya's Place was birthed!  In 2007, I began to create a place that would extend beyond my classroom and my little girl.  At Mya's Place, my mission is to help other parents and educators foster and cultivate a healthy self-image in their children. Experience the power of  Mya's Place room by room...!
